Iran Turns Petrochem Research into Commercial Technology, Cutting Reliance on Imports

TEHRAN, Sept. 4 (NIPNA)— Iran is moving to commercialize domestically developed petrochemical technologies, catalysts and chemicals as the country seeks to reduce its reliance on imported industrial inputs and increase the value generated from its research base.

The Petrochemical Research and Technology Company has brought several technologies from laboratory and pilot stages into industrial production, including catalysts used in the synthesis of ammonia, ethylene oxide and methanol, according to Managing Director Mohammad Kermani. The company has also developed technologies for water-gas shift and methanation catalysts and completed work on a specialized high-density polyethylene grade used for beverage-bottle caps.

The effort reflects a broader shift in Iran’s petrochemical industry from simply expanding production capacity toward developing the process technology, catalysts and specialty materials needed to support domestic production.

Domestic catalyst production

About 60% of the catalysts required by Iran’s oil industry are now produced domestically and are being used in industrial units, according to the company. Research programs are also underway to scale up technologies for the remaining catalysts to commercial production.

The annual value of catalysts consumed by Iran’s oil industry is estimated at about $1.1 billion, with roughly $700 million worth produced domestically, Kermani said.

The company says performance feedback from petrochemical complexes indicates that domestically produced catalysts have delivered satisfactory results. Some methanol-synthesis and reforming catalysts have also outperformed foreign equivalents in certain technical characteristics, according to Kermani.

From research to industrial production

Commercialization remains one of the main challenges for research organizations because developing technical knowledge does not automatically translate into industrial-scale production.

The company says catalysts for ammonia synthesis and ethylene oxide have already reached commercial production, while technologies for low-temperature water-gas-shift and methanation catalysts are ready to be licensed to developers. Ziegler-Natta catalyst technology for high-density polyethylene production under Mitsui and Hostalen technologies has also been finalized and is ready for market introduction.

A domestically developed HDPE grade for carbonated-drink bottle caps has completed industrial testing and has been assessed as capable of fully replacing imported grades, according to the company.

The company has also commercialized an upgraded potassium-carbonate activator technology that it says is technically and economically competitive with foreign alternatives.

Cutting energy use

Research programs have also expanded into energy efficiency.

The company has developed technologies for designing, modifying and optimizing industrial burners aimed at reducing fuel consumption, addressing operating problems and making greater use of excess gases sent to flares, particularly hydrogen. The technology has been implemented at several petrochemical plants, including Nouri, Sablan, Bushehr and Bandar Imam.

Specialty polymers

Iran is also targeting higher-value products and advanced polymers.

The Petrochemical Research and Technology Company is negotiating investment and industrial production of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) using its existing technical know-how. It is also conducting technical and commercial talks with a private company to establish what would be Iran’s first industrial-scale ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) plant.

The company has also signed a contract for polypropylene production under its license at Petrochemical Pars, while basic engineering documents for a methanol-to-propylene unit have been completed and delivered to a domestic company.

Partnerships with technology companies

Collaboration with Iranian knowledge-based companies has become a key part of the commercialization strategy.

Completed projects include commercial production of ammonia- and ethylene-oxide-synthesis catalysts, continued production of methanol-synthesis catalysts and manufacturing of an upgraded potassium-carbonate activator. The company says additional projects remain under development.

The research company currently holds technical know-how for 20 petrochemical processes and chemical materials, of which 17 technologies have been licensed to applicants. Its portfolio includes methanol, polyethylene, polypropylene, methanol-to-propylene, ammonia, vinyl acetate monomer and PVA technologies.

It has also developed 24 catalysts and initiators for Iran’s oil industry and signed commercialization agreements for many of them. The company maintains cooperation agreements, memoranda and contracts with about 30 knowledge-based companies.

A shift toward higher-value production

The strategy represents an attempt to turn research spending into commercially deployable technologies, while reducing exposure to imported catalysts and chemicals.

For Iran’s petrochemical industry, the economic value of that transition extends beyond import substitution. Licensing technologies to domestic producers can create new manufacturing capacity and private-sector jobs, while closer cooperation with universities and research centers is intended to connect industrial demand with applied research.

The company says its longer-term objective is to expand domestic technological capabilities and develop more advanced, higher-value petrochemical products, with commercialization serving as the bridge between laboratory research and industrial-scale production.
