TEHRAN, August 11 (NIPNA) — Iran’s petrochemical industry is a key pillar of efforts to support domestic production and reduce reliance on exports of unprocessed commodities, according to Rahim Zare, a member of Parliament’s Budget and Planning Commission.

Despite sanctions, economic challenges and damage sustained during the recent conflict, the sector has continued to expand and can play a larger role in driving Iran’s industrial and economic development, Zare said in an interview with NIPNA.

“Petrochemicals are at the forefront of efforts to prevent the export of raw materials and are one of the main pillars supporting domestic production,” Zare said, adding that the industry is currently on a path of growth and development following years of investment and expansion.

The sector has maintained its progress despite economic pressures and damage caused during the conflict, making it an important contributor to Iran’s broader economic development, he said.

Iran’s petrochemical industry has also generated significant revenues for the country despite some of the most stringent sanctions imposed in recent years, Zare said. He expressed hope that the trend would continue.

Financing and the removal of obstacles to rebuilding petrochemical facilities damaged during the conflict will receive particular attention, Zare said, without providing details on the scale or timing of the required investment.

Iran has increasingly relied on its petrochemical sector as a source of industrial value creation and export earnings, while seeking to expand domestic processing and reduce its dependence on the export of crude and other raw materials.
