TEHRAN (NIPNA) -- Iran is about to launch Marjan Petrochemical Plant, an official said.

Mohammad Hassan Peyvandi, chairman of the board of directors at Tamin Petroleum and Petrochemical Investment Co. (TAPPICO), told NIPNA about the company's plans for the current Iranian calendar year which began on March 21.

"There are a lot of unfinished major projects which we hope, some of them will come on-stream this year," he said.

For example, Peyvandi said, Marjan Petrochemical Company is one of the important plans that is planned to come online this year.

Moreover, the second phase of the Persian Gulf Star Refinery will also be operational this calendar year and the third phase will come on-stream next year, he added.

The TOPPICO Chairman further said that supporting local manufacturers is being considered by decision makers in the petrochemical industry so that restrains will be imposed for importing foreign-made items that have quality rivals inside the country.

Once fully operational, the facility will supply 1.65 million tons of methanol annually.

Marjan Petrochemical Plant is one of the three major petrochemical projects expected to come on-stream this calendar year (which began on March 21) along with Bushehr and Kaveh petrochemical projects.

Kaveh Petrochemical Plant is the largest methanol unit in Iran and the Middle East.

The three projects will more than double Iran's methanol output and bring it to over 10 million tons annually.
