TEHRAN (NIPNA) – Iran's Karoon Petrochemical Plant has successfully supplied and marketed a modified grade of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI), the company's PR says.

The public relations department of the company said the items is being marketed under the trade mark, 'LMDI B'.

The item is essential for the production of various ether and sterile base pre-polymers, including the pre-polymers used in HR foams. With the production of this MDI grade for the first time in the Middle East, the value chain of prepolymer production was completed in the facility.

Before production of the item, LMDI needed to be imported to the country, which troubled domestic suppliers of polyurethane and caused massive foreign currency flights.

LMDI is used for production of items like shoe soles, floorings, adhesives and sealants, elastomers, coatings, car bumpers, tires, recreational goods, mechanical goods, etc.

This product is in the polycarbodiamide family and is known as modified methylenedione diisocyanate. The product has low viscosity, and is liquid at room temperature.

This item is more flexible than raw isocyanate. The polycarbamide chain helps stabilize polymer against hydrolytic degradation.

Since this product can be used alone or in combination with prepolymers, its performance will improve the demolding time compared to conventional linear prepolymers.

The unique combination of modified MDI content, available carbodiimide and liquid formulation make it easy to transport, ease the processing and maintenance of high physical properties in difficult weather conditions and environmental conditions.

Karoon Petrochemical Company is the first producer of isocyanates in the Middle East with a nominal production capacity of 80,000 tons of isocyanates (TDI and MDI) in Bandar Emam Special Economic Zone.
