TEHRAN (NIPNA) – Iran's Karoon Petrochemical Plant (KPP) has sent its first consignment of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) to China, the plant's managing director said.

Afshin Kiani said his company has exported 320 tons of MDI to China.

Launched in 2016, the MDI unit of the company was completed by relying on domestic capabilities after Swedish and Germany licencors of the project left Iran due to US-led sanctions on Tehran's nuclear agenda.

The company can now supply 40,000 tons/year of 9 grades of MDI and is now supplying polymeric and pure MDI on domestic and international markets.

Karoon Petrochemical Plant is Middle East's first producer of isocyanates, Kiani said.

Iran consumes 20,000 tons of MDI annually which means the rest of the plants' output will be up for grabs by foreign consumers.
