TEHRAN, Sept. 14 (NIPNA) — Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has ordered government agencies to take measures to reduce fuel consumption, including expanding remote work and introducing a weekly car-free day for employees.

The directive, issued by the secretary of the government board, calls on all executive bodies to minimize employees’ use of private cars for commuting and designate one day each week as a “car-free day.”

On that day, employees and managers are to use public transportation, including buses and the metro, to travel to work. Managers have been instructed to use appropriate incentives, awareness measures and support to encourage compliance and promote fuel conservation and public transport use.

Government agencies have also been instructed, where possible, to use existing remote-work regulations to arrange remote work for employees whose duties can be performed remotely, as well as for employees living in cities surrounding their workplaces.

The directive also requires government bodies to accelerate the scrapping of their outdated vehicles in line with regulations governing the automotive industry and replace them, where needed, with electric, gas-powered or hybrid vehicles.

The Tehran Municipality and other major-city municipalities have been asked to cooperate with government agencies in planning for greater use of public transportation by public-sector employees.

The measures form part of broader efforts to manage fuel consumption and reduce the use of private vehicles by government employees.
