The memorandum was signed by senior oil officials, including Hassan
Abbasszadeh, deputy petroleum minister and head of NPC, who praised NIGC’s
collaboration in last year’s “10% Energy Consumption Reduction Campaign,”
describing it as a programme that delivered “valuable social, environmental and
economic results.”
Abbasszadeh said the new agreement incorporates “constructive
revisions” and will support broader energy-efficiency initiatives as well as
cultural, social and environmental programmes. He stressed the need to address
“non-standard consumption patterns” and reduce energy waste across all sectors.
Given the petrochemical industry’s key role in economic growth and
foreign-currency generation, Abbasszadeh said improved energy management in
non-productive sectors would help prevent supply restrictions for industrial
users.
Under the agreement, petrochemical companies will invest in efficiency projects
across multiple segments, in line with national regulations and consumption
standards, enabling them to benefit from the gas saved through these measures.
Saeed Tavakoli, deputy oil minister and head of NIGC, also welcomed
the renewed cooperation. He described the 10% reduction campaign as a
“successful experience” requiring further expansion, adding that coordination
between the two state-owned firms, civil-society groups and major industries
has created an “effective model” for developing energy-management programmes.
Tavakoli said he hopes companies participating under the new
memorandum will cut consumption in non-productive areas and channel more energy
toward productive industries. He reaffirmed the readiness of provincial gas
companies and NIGC headquarters to implement the agreement, noting that
ensuring stable output at petrochemical plants and prioritising gas supply to
units with certified savings remain central goals of the Oil Ministry.
NPC and NIGC previously signed a similar memorandum on Dec. 19, 2023,
focused on the 10% reduction campaign, which officials said helped raise public
awareness and improve consumer behaviour.
