Speaking at the 7th Iran Expo, Ebrahimi highlighted that large volumes
of hydrogen—particularly from olefin production units—are currently
underutilized or flared. “Redirecting this hydrogen toward steel production
offers a strategic opportunity to reduce reliance on natural gas and take the
first practical step toward green steel,” he said.
Ebrahimi revealed ongoing negotiations with the Persian Gulf Holding
to source hydrogen from petrochemical facilities in Mahshahr and channel it to
the company’s Shadgan unit. “Strengthening ties between the steel and
petrochemical sectors is critical for achieving sustainable growth and reducing
environmental impact,” he noted.
He further explained that while producing hydrogen through
electrolysis using renewable electricity is a long-term goal, leveraging existing
hydrogen waste streams is an immediate and realistic pathway. “Utilizing this
resource now can significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions and enhance
energy efficiency in steel production,” he concluded.
