TEHRAN (NIPNA) -- Iranian Minister of Petroleum Bijan Zangeneh says the northwestern province of Azarbaijan can turn into a petrochemical hub once it doubles its petrochemical output.

Speaking on the sidelines of a symbolic ground-breaking ceremony to launch construction of Miandoab-Tabriz ethylene pipeline on Thursday, Zangeneh said East Azarbaijan Province can become a petrochemical hub in Iran by receiving feedstock from the pipeline.

Once the pipeline is complete, Tabriz Petrochemical Complex will no longer have to buy costly feedstock and it will experience and economic boom after the project’s completion, said the official.

He said the pipeline’s construction is key to survival of the complex.

Zangeneh further added that Tabriz can turn into one of Iran’s petrochemical hubs given the fact that the city has no shortage of investors and acid financiers.

The pipeline can supply up to 12 million cubic meters per day of gas to the facility.

The 154-km pipeline will deliver 200,000 tons of ethylene annually to Tabriz Petrochemical Complex. The delivery capacity of the pipeline can reach half a million tons/year.

The ethylene will be supplied by the West Ethylene Pipeline which brings the item from Kavian Petrochemical Plant.

The 1,200km pipeline is being laid out by Bakhtar Petrochemical Company for feeding 12 petrochemical projects in western Iran.
