BUSHEHR (NIPNA) – A fire that broke out Wednesday (June 11) morning on a barge docked at the Kavian Methanol Petrochemical terminal in southern Iran has been brought under control, officials said, though three people lost their lives and two others were injured.

According to Kourosh Dehghan, Director General of Crisis Management at Bushehr Province Governorate, the incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. local time during welding operations on the barge, which was undergoing maintenance near the terminal jetty. He cited negligence during welding as the likely cause of the explosion and fire.

“Firefighting teams from the city of Dayyer, the port authority, and Kangan County succeeded in extinguishing the blaze,” Dehghan said, adding that fire crews are currently engaged in cooling operations at the site.

Ehsan Izadpanah, Head of the Bushehr Red Crescent Society, confirmed the death toll and noted that two injured individuals had been transferred to local hospitals for treatment. “Relief and rescue efforts are still ongoing with teams from the Red Crescent and the fire department on site,” he said.

In a statement, Kavian Methanol Petrochemical Company confirmed the explosion occurred during repair work on a service barge and emphasized that the fire had no impact on the main petrochemical complex, located about 2 kilometers from the jetty. “The plant continues to operate normally,” the company said.

Authorities are investigating the incident, and further details are expected pending the results of a technical review.
