TEHRAN (NIPNA) – Senior environmental officers from Iran’s petrochemical sector are convening this week in Shiraz to advance a national strategy for sustainable development, waste management, and emissions reduction, in line with global climate goals and circular economy principles.

The three-day forum, hosted by Shiraz Petrochemical Company and running from May 6 to May 8, brings together the heads of environmental departments from petrochemical firms across the country, alongside executives from the National Petrochemical Company (NPC) and the Persian Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (PGPIC). The discussions aim to integrate environmental priorities into Iran’s Seventh National Development Plan and strengthen alignment with international frameworks such as COP29 and COP30.

Key issues under review include minimizing industrial waste, expanding green spaces, digitizing environmental reporting systems, and establishing a centralized environmental data bank for the petrochemical sector. Participants are also examining strategies for carbon emission reduction, water recycling, and the adoption of artificial intelligence to monitor and improve environmental performance.

The event marks a significant step toward enhancing transparency and accountability in one of Iran’s most critical industries. It also signals a shift toward proactive environmental governance, with officials emphasizing the role of the petrochemical industry in meeting national sustainability targets and engaging with global initiatives to combat plastic pollution and transition to net-zero carbon emissions.

Strategic planning sessions are expected to yield concrete action plans, target-setting, and resource allocation frameworks based on input from experts and industry stakeholders.
