TEHRAN (NIPNA) – Karoon Petrochemical Plant is launching a HYCO (hydrogen and carbon monoxide production) plant by winter 2021 which is expected to ensure production sustainability in the plant while increasing its isocyanate output by 30 to 35%.

The CEO of Karoon Petrochemical Plant said: "With the launch of the HYCO development plan in the winter, production sustainability will be obtained for the company, and 30 to 35 percent of the production capacity of isocyanates in the country will be increased."

Alireza Sedighizadeh told a virtual press conference that the company’s productions were used for completion of the value chain which played a key role in preventing outflow of hard currency from the country.

Karoon Petrochemical Plant is the only producer of isocyanates in Iran and the biggest one in the Middle East.

He continued: "Hydrogen and carbon monoxide are vital feedstock for Karoon Petrochemical Plant. In other words, these items are strategic feedstock for Karoon Petrochemical Complex. Accordingly, in order to solve the production bottlenecks and increase productivity and operation with 100% of the plant’s nominal capacity, the HYCO project is under way with €50 million of investment. The project is aimed at production of hydrogen and carbon monoxide.”

The project is expected to generate between 1,000 and 1,500 direct and indirect jobs.

The complex’s output is used in various industries including auto-making and household appliances.
