TEHRAN (NIPNA) -- The senior representative of Sojitz said Japanese firms are seeking to ensure their mid- and long-term presence in Iran’s petrochemical sector.

Speaking to NIPNA on the sidelines of a ceremony to sign a memorandum of understanding with Iran’s National Petrochemical Company (NPC), Masaro Sato said his company is planning to build a petrochemical complex in Assalouyeh, southern Iran, with support from the NPC.

He said his company is currently operating in 50 countries and is a major supplier of petrochemicals.

Sojitz has also made huge investments in the energy sector in different parts of the world as well, Sato said.

Asked about the level his company is willing to invest in Iran, he said the exact number cannot be disclosed yet because more detailed assessments are needed in this regard.

Sato also added that many foreign firms have signaled their willingness to join petrochemical projects in Iran so far, expressing hope that the document will lead to more cooperation between NPC and Sojitz.

Iran is rich with technical savvy and we can exploit the knowhow as well as natural resources in Iran for bolstering out ties with Iran in the future, he added.

On Saturday, NPC and Sojitz signed an MoU for enhanced cooperation in petrochemical plans in Iran.
