TEHRAN, Jan 25 (NIPNA) – A senior member of Iran’s parliamentary Energy Commission reaffirmed the legislature’s commitment to supporting the country’s petrochemical sector as a key driver of economic growth and export revenue.

Reza Sepahvand told NIPNA on Sunday that the petrochemical industry, ranked just behind oil in economic importance, plays a pivotal role in Iran’s economy. “Balanced development of the petrochemical sector has a significant impact on the economy, and the parliament is ready to provide full support,” he said.

Sepahvand highlighted that national policy documents, including the general policies of a resistance-based economy, emphasize the expansion of petrochemical exports as a strategy to reduce the economy’s vulnerability to fluctuations in oil and gas revenues.

“Few industries today operate independently of petrochemical products and their downstream chains,” he said. “Given the sector’s extensive interconnections, it holds substantial potential for value creation. Iran’s geographic position relative to other gas-rich countries offers opportunities to further develop complementary petrochemical industries.”

The lawmaker also underscored the strategic importance of petrochemical products as major non-oil exports, describing them as a strength in the country’s energy sector.

Sepahvand concluded by stressing that ongoing legislative and governmental support, along with the resolution of challenges in current projects, would accelerate the growth of the industry and yield tangible results in the near future.
