TEHRAN (NIPNA) — The Petrochemical Special Economic Zone Organization (PETZONE) is on the verge of launching Phase 2 of its development plan in Mahshahr, a critical step aimed at deepening Iran’s petrochemical value chain and supporting national production goals.

Speaking to NIPNA, Mohammadreza Motieri, CEO of PETZONE, confirmed that the final regulatory stages are underway. “We are now in the last phase of obtaining environmental approval,” he said. “All other necessary permits are in place, including the water use license for the Phase 2 expansion.”

Motieri explained that the Department of Environment has sent a formal request to the Southeast Khuzestan Water Company to verify the validity of the water license. “Our consulting team has responded to all queries from the DoE, and we expect to receive the environmental green light soon, allowing us to initiate Phase 2.”

Strategic Expansion Aligned with National Investment Goals

In line with the Supreme Leader’s designation of the current year as the year of “Investment in Production,” Motieri emphasized the petrochemical industry’s readiness to grow. “Plans are in place to increase annual petrochemical output by roughly $7 billion. PETZONE is fully prepared to support this expansion.”

Local Employment and Value Creation in Focus

Motieri underscored the organization’s commitment to value creation, sustainable development, and local job generation. “With the activation of Phase 2, we anticipate substantial employment opportunities for residents of Khuzestan — particularly in Mahshahr County and Bandar Imam Khomeini.”

The new phase is expected to attract further investment into downstream petrochemical projects, enhance regional infrastructure, and reinforce Iran’s strategic shift from raw material exports to value-added production.
