TEHRAN (NIPNA) -- Iran's deputy petroleum minister and head of the National Petrochemical Company said on Wednesday that developing petrochemical technologies was the long-term strategy of Iran's energy and economic diplomacy.

Morteza Shahmirzai made the remarks on the sidelines of the 13th international exhibition of plastics machinery and materials, Rosplast, which is being held in Russia with the participation of 31 countries.

He said that Russian companies, in addition to being interested in the upstream and midstream sectors of Iran's oil industry, were ready to invest in Iran's downstream petrochemical sector and develop technologies.

"Our proposal to Russian companies for cooperation and investment in Iran's petrochemical industry has been mainly in the field of exchanging technical and engineering services, especially in the field of technology and catalysts that are needed by this industry," he said.

He added that fortunately, with the preparations and special facilities made by the government, Iran was ready for bilateral investment and cooperation with foreign countries.

Shahmirzai said that Iran's rich oil and gas reserves, proximity to high seas, easy access to export markets such as India, China and East Asian countries and Africa, the presence of skilled workforce, localization of technology, production of goods and equipment at low cost were among the superior and reliable advantages of foreign investment in Iran.

He said that Iran's nominal petrochemical capacity had exceeded 92 million tonnes per year and was expanding rapidly with strategic plans in new areas, especially in the south of the country along the coasts of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea and in new phases of Asaluyeh and Mahshahr hubs.

The 13th international exhibition of plastics machinery and materials, along with the 17th international exhibition of moulds and tools, production equipment and technologies, and the 27th international exhibition of packaging industry are being held in Russia from June 6 to June 8.

The National Petrochemical Company of Iran and Amir Kabir, Shazand, Maroon, Tabriz and Ariasasol petrochemical companies are participating in this exhibition as a pavilion.
