TEHRAN (NIPNA) -- Iran’s Persian Gulf Hoveyzeh gas refinery has started producing and transferring ethane, a valuable feedstock for petrochemicals, to the Imam Khomeini port complex, the company’s chief executive said on Wednesday.

Afshin Kiani, CEO of Hoveyzeh Gas Refining Company, said the project was one of the main goals of establishing the refinery, which was inaugurated in April by President Ebrahim Raisi.

“After extensive efforts and overcoming existing shortages, we finally managed to produce and inject rich and valuable ethane plus (C2+) product into the pipeline for delivery to Imam Khomeini petrochemical complex,” he said, according to the Persian Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company.

The first phase of Hoveyzeh gas refinery has a capacity of 14.2 million cubic meters per day of natural gas and 10,000 barrels per day of gas condensate.

Iran has been expanding its petrochemical sector as a way to cope with U.S. sanctions that have hampered its oil exports. The country aims to increase its petrochemical output capacity to 100 million tonnes.
