TEHRAN (NIPNA) -- The design, construction and commissioning of the Sulfur Recycling Unit (SRU) has begun with the technical knowhow of the Petroleum Industry Research Institute at Ilam Petrochemical Plant.

According to the Petroleum Industry Research Institute, Hamid Ganji, director of the group's technologies for recovery and conversion of gaseous pollutants, said in sulfur recovery or sulfur recovery processes hydrogen sulfide is converted and in the sweetening process, hydrogen sulfide is separated from the existing compounds using an amine solvent.

Referring to the dangers of hydrogen sulfide to the environment, he added: "Under such conditions, strict environmental laws are applied to prevent its release. Acid gas produced by refineries is essentially converted into elemental sulfur in sulfur recycling processes, from which sulfur can be used in chemical, agricultural and health industries. Doing so not only eliminates environmental pollution but also has economic value.”

The director of the Department of Recovery Technologies and Conversion of Gas Pollutants of the Petroleum Industry Research Institute, emphasizing that the Petroleum Industry Research Institute has been working in the field of sulfur recycling technology for more than 10 years, said: “These units were owned by foreign companies, which due to the importance of environmental issues, the Petroleum Industry Research Institute localized the technical savvy of the SRU process in its plans.”

He also pointed to the importance of localization of this process by the Petroleum Industry Research Institute, and said: "The research institute has not only been able to gain technical knowledge of SRU process, but also made catalysts related to this process well and technical knowledge of making these catalysts with the aim of commercialization."
