TEHRAN (NIPNA) – The spokesman of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said imposition of sanctions on Iran's petrochemical companies including the Persian Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (PGPIC), by the United States was it as an example of “economic terrorism”.

Abbas Mousavi on Saturday strongly condemned the US government’s practice as an example of “economic terrorism and continued hostilities against the Iranian nation.”

He pointing out that only one week of patience was needed to prove the absurdity of the US president's claim to be ready to negotiate with Iran, adding: "US’s maximum pressure policy is a failed policy that was repeatedly tried by its former presidents. This is a wrong path, and the US government can rest assured that it will not achieve any of its goals through this policy.”

Some US officials’ calls for talks with Iran are deceitful, unrealistic, and solely for the purpose off attracting public attention, he said, adding that the United States had violated the principles and rules of international relations and law.

"All the countries have a responsibility to react against the flagrant violations of the fundamental principles of international law and not to allow the international community's achievements in multilateralism to be undermined by bullying and unilateral acts of the American governing body,” Mousavi added.

The US Treasury Department announced on Friday (June 7) new sanctions against Iran's petrochemical sector, including the largest petrochemical holding in the country, the Persian Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (PGPIC).
