TEHRAN (NIPNA) -- The development of Iran's petrochemical industry will be propylene-based, a senior Iranian official says.

Speaking to NIPNA, Mohammad Hassan Peyvandi, chairman of the board of directors at Tamin Petroleum and Petrochemical Investment Co. (TAPPICO), said various plans were foreseen for the future of the petrochemical industry, emphasizing the need for more propylene output in the industry.

"By creating the necessary infrastructure for production of propylene, a new opportunity will be provided for achievement of the goals of the industry as the main driving force of the mid- and downstream sectors and employment as well as attraction of fresh investments," he said.

"The petrochemical industry is the pillar of the country's economic development, and it is linked to all sectors of the industry, and this valuable industry must be supported via all the economic sectors," he said.

Given the fact that propylene production is currently lower than that of ethylene production in the country, and most of the downstream petrochemical industries being developed need propylene, enhanced production of the item must be seriously heeded, he said.

The official said production of methanol from natural gas and then converting it into propylene is one of the most economical methods for propylene production in Iran given abundance of natural gas as feedstock in the country.
