GACHSARAN (NIPNA) -- CEO of the National Petrochemical Company (NPC) Reza Norouzzadeh said new downstream petrochemical complexes must be built in Iran for production of ethylene oxides, oxlates, polyethylenes and isocyanates for production of value-added products domestically.

Speaking to NIPNA, the official underlined the rich resources of oil and gas in Iran, adding the country has been enjoying petrochemical industry for 55 years and has taken considerable steps in this field over the last 20 years.

"However, urea and ammonia are still the major products of Iran's petrochemical plants," he admitted, saying that, albeit, over the past 10 to 15 years, other petrochemical units for diversifying petrochemical products have come on-stream in the country but more efforts are needed to diversity petrochemical products and developing the sector's downstream industries.

Norouzzadeh, who is also deputy petroleum minister for petrochemical affairs, said projects like Persian Gulf Bidboland Refinery and Gachsaran petrochemical Plant are major projects under construction in Iran which can be instrumental in diversification of downstream products in the industry.
