TEHRAN (NIPNA) -- The former managing director of the National Petrochemical Company (NPC) said application of state-of-the-art technologies in petrochemical industries would dramatically help reduce environment hazards created by the industry.

Addressing a conference on sustainable development in oil industry on Monday, Abbas Shari Moqaddam said construction of oil facilities near Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman has caused serious environmental challenges in the region.

"Today, oil and petrochemical industries have prioritized preservation of the environment and petrochemical plants are mandated to obtain environmental licenses for their activities," he added.

Construction of wastewater treatment units, wastewater management facilities and greenery near petrochemical plants are some of the measures that can be taken to save the environment, he added.

The former NPC official further said adopting the latest technologies can also be instrumental in saving the environment.

"Besides reducing pollution, new technologies can improve efficiency of operations in the sector," he added.
