TEHRAN (NIPNA) -- The Petrochemical Research and Technology Company (PRTC) has successfully launched a pilot project for production of vinyl alcohol that will save the country 20 million dollars annually by curbing imports of the item.

Esmaeil Qambari, PRTC director, has said the project is one of the achievements of the Arak center of the company and was developed by the center’s experts.

Vinyl alcohol, also called ethenol (IUPAC name), is an alcohol. It is not to be confused with the drinking alcohol, ethanol. With the formula CH2CHOH, vinyl alcohol is an isomer of acetaldehyde and ethylene oxide. It can be formed by elimination of water from ethylene glycol at a temperature of 900 °C and low pressure.

It is widely used in various industries like textile, petrochemical, cosmetics, paint production, and adhesives.

Iran needs over 8,000 tons of the item annually and spends at least $20m for its import every year.

The pilot project began in 2013 by PRTC. It is now supplying two grades of the item.
