TEHRAN (NIPNA) -- A senior petrochemical official says plans are under way for construction of a 7,300-ton ammonia unit and a 9,000-ton urea unit in Assalouyeh, southern Iran, for gathering the CO2 emitted by petrochemical facilities in the region.

Ali Mohammad Bossaqzadeh, director of production control at National Petrochemical Company (NPC), said the projects will be built jointly by the NPC and the Persian Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (PGPIC) and Parsian Oil and Gas Company.

He also said that a European firm has signaled readiness to join the project.

Once operational, the units will convert CO2, hydrogen and nitrogen into value added items.

The official said that the technical savvy for construction of the units is indigenized in Iran, but expressed optimism that the Research Center of Petroleum Industry (RIPI), the research arm of the Iranian Ministry of Petroleum, will be supporting the projects as well.
