TEHRAN (NIPNA) -- Head of the Downstream Petrochemical Industries Bureau Reza Mohtashamipour underlined the necessity of securing a firm foothold in the Iraqi market for petrochemical products.

Speaking to NIPNA, the official said China and Turkey have inundated the Iraqi market with their items and Iranian producers have so far lost the game to their Turkish and Chinese rivals in Iraq.

He said Iraq and other neighboring states are the main destinations of Iran’s plastic products as over 60% of the country’s output is being exported to Iraq.

He said, however, exports to Iraq have dwindled in recent years and new strategies need to be devised by exporters to restore their previous presence in the Iraqi market.

The official said the arrival of Chinese machinery to Iraq for building plastics workshops has dramatically reduced demand in the Iraqi market for Iranian items.

Besides, customs regulations have tightened in Iraq for import of items from Iran.

In 2011, Iran exported about 23,000 tons of polymer products to Iraq which is expected to reach 95,000 by the end of the current Iranian calendar year to March 20.
