TEHRAN (NIPNA) -- Japan’s Sojitz has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Iran’s National Petrochemical Company (NPC) to start technical and economic appraisal studies for joining MTP and GTPP projects in Iran.

Managing director of NPC Marziyeh Shahdaei said on the sidelines of a ceremony to sign the document with Sojitz on Saturday that exploitation of natural gas is one of the priorities of the NPC given abundance of the commodity in Iran and the MoU is signed in this regard.

She said the company is seeking to operationalize methanol to propylene (MTP) and gas to polypropylene (GTPP) plans in Iran in a bid to complete the industry’s value chain by indigenizing the related knowhow.

“Thanks to the betterment of Iran’s international ties and indication of interest by foreign firms to restore their presence in Iran or join projects in the country, Sojitz has indicated its preparedness to engage in petrochemical projects and complete the chain of value in the sector in Iran,” she added.

Shahdaei, who is also deputy petroleum minister in petrochemical affairs, said besides MTP, Sojitz is pretty keen on engaging in GTPP projects in Iran as well.

The NPC chief further said the company has also initiated talks with a leading German chemical firm for importing the technical knowhow of MTP projects.
